Horse that participated in Tennessee event found to have rabies
September 12, 2006 – Persons who attended the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in Shelbyville, Tennessee during August 23 through August 31, 2006 should be aware that a horse stabled on the grounds during the event has been confirmed to have rabies according to public health officials from the Tennessee Department of Health.

State Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases appoints new regional coordinator for the Savannah area
September 8, 2006 – The State Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases (MHDDAD) has appointed Charles Ringling as the new Regional Coordinator for the Savannah area. As Regional Coordinator, Mr. Ringling will support continuing systems improvement to the delivery of behavioral health care services, including a comprehensive system of care for children and adolescents.

Public Health officials closely following three botulism cases in Washington County related to carrot juice
September 15, 2006 - Local, state, and federal public health officials have been closely monitoring three cases of foodborne botulism in Washington County. Investigators determined that the three persons shared two meals and all consumed carrot juice from the same container before becoming ill.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month: A time to promote employment and new opportunities
September 29, 2006 – As the country recognizes Down Syndrome Awareness month, the Georgia Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases (MHDDAD) is investing unprecedented funding in services that promote employment and independence for people with Down syndrome and other disabilities.

Houston County parents have a chance to catch up on child support
September 19, 2006 – Over 500 Houston County parents who are behind on child support will be offered the opportunity to make payments. This opportunity, appropriately named Amnesty Day, is being offered by the Georgia Department of Human Resources’ Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) and is extended to all parents with a child support case in Houston County who are at least two months behind on their payments.

Houston County collects back Child Support
September 27, 2006 –Thousands of dollars were collected during a one-day event from parents who were more than two months behind in back child support payments, due to a collaborative effort among the Office of Child Support Services, Houston County Probation, and the Houston County Sheriff’s Department.

Help stop elder abuse by supporting the Elder Justice Act
September 28, 2006 - Elder abuse is a crime, but that doesn’t stop some people from abusing, neglecting and exploiting older persons and disabled adults. During fiscal year 2006, the Division of Aging Services’ Adult Protective Services (APS) Central Intake investigated nearly 7,000 APS referrals.

Georgia is third highest in childhood immunization coverage
September 28, 2006 – Georgia improved from fourth to third its national rank for immunizing children against vaccine preventable diseases according to the National Immunization Survey (NIS), released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Gainesville hosts public hearing October 10 on the State Plan for Aging
September 28, 2006 – Gainesville area residents will have an opportunity to attend a public hearing to give their input on the Division of Aging Services (DAS) 2007 State Plan renewal Tuesday, October 10, 2006, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Park and Recreation Civic Center, 830 Green Street in Gainesville.

Douglas County collects back Child Support
September 12, 2006 – Due to a collaborative effort among the Office of Child Support Services, Douglas County Probation, and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, thousands of dollars were collected during a one-day event from parents who were more than two months behind in back child support payments.

Division of Aging Services schedules Georgia public guardians training
September 1, 2006 - The Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), Division of Aging Services (DAS) is scheduling training for Georgia public guardians. Informational sessions will be held September 7-12 followed by 20 hours of required training in October.

DHR to be awarded $1 million grant for web-based food stamp application
September 12, 2006 – On Wednesday, Sept 13th, the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) and its partner organizations will be presented with a $1 million grant from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to develop a web-based food stamp application program.

DHR schedules public hearings on its state plan for Aging
September 27, 2006 – Public hearings to get consumer input for the Division of Aging Services (DAS) 2007 State Plan renewal will be held statewide from October 10 to November 16, 2006. Public hearings are scheduled in Gainesville, Newnan, Dallas, Warner Robbins, Dublin, Brunswick, Waycross, Albany, Atlanta, Thomson, Covington, and Columbus.

DHR Board to meet September 20, 2006
September 18, 2006 – The Board of Human Resources will hold its official monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 20, in room 29.250, Two Peachtree Street N.W. in Atlanta, immediately following a review of the morning committee meetings that will begin at 1:15 p.m.

DFCS promotes community and faith-based projects to prevent abuse and neglect
September 14, 2006 – Beginning September 18t h, the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) will hold regional roundtable discussions across Georgia in order to provide DFCS and local community groups with an opportunity to enhance community action and partnerships. DFCS is working to engage Community and Faith-Based Organizations around the state in an ongoing effort to strengthen Georgia families and children.

Cemetery Memorial Service to be held at Central State Hospital
September 28, 2006 - Central State Hospital (CSH) and the Georgia Consumer Council are hosting the annual Cemetery Memorial Project. Each year during October, mental health consumers, advocates and public policy makers gather at the historic grounds of CSH to unveil a new cemetery marker as part of the cemetery memorial.
