Q. How do humans catch the avian flu?

Most cases of avian flu in humans have been a result of close human contact with infected birds or chickens. There has been very limited transmission of the virus between people.

 Q. Will avian flu cause a human flu pandemic?

A pandemic is a worldwide flu outbreak. The avian flu virus has the potential to cause a pandemic because there is no immunity to the virus in the human population. Currently, however, the virus does not spread easily from person-to-person. If the virus mutates and can spread between people more easily, it is possible for it to cause a pandemic. For this reason, scientists and health experts are watching the virus very closely.

Q. How is Georgia preparing for a possible flu pandemic?

Planning for a possible pandemic has been underway for several years in Georgia, as part of the state’s overall emergency preparedness planning. The main objectives of the state’s pandemic response plans are to minimize morbidity and mortality associated with pandemic influenza, minimize social disruption, and provide support to the health care system. The state plan calls for enhanced surveillance and laboratory testing, helping support surge capacity in hospitals, and developing a system of home care for people who are not sick enough to be hospitalized. A key component of state pandemic preparations will be helping local communities, businesses, community organizations, and families and individuals plan and prepare.
